Antique Silver Stanhope Signet Ring; Circa 1910

A very unusual antique signet ring with a secret hidden inside...

Created in crisp silver and made in the classic oval signet profile, at first glance this appears to be a rather traditional ring. Look a little closer, however, and you’ll discover something entirely unexpected. Hidden within the signet is a tiny Stanhope lens. When viewed closely through the lens, a miniature image of three nude women is revealed.

Unlike many of the more risqué Stanhope rings, which often contain tiny photographic images, the image within this ring appears instead to be a drawn or illustrated classical scene, depicting the Three Graces. The Three Graces, traditionally identified in Greek mythology as Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia, became an enduring subject in Western art, appearing in Roman antiquity and repeatedly reimagined by artists throughout the centuries.

It gives this slightly mischievous ring an unexpected art historical dimension. There is certainly a hint of the playful and risqué imagery for which some Stanhope jewels are known, but the choice of subject feels rather more cultured. Transforming what might initially appear to be a secret erotic image into something with a distinctly classical reference.

We love the dual personality of it: from the outside, a handsome and understated silver signet; hidden within, a tiny lens revealing a scene inspired by one of the most enduring subjects in classical art.
