Antique Enamel 'Darling' Baby Ring in 14 Carat Gold

A  sentimental antique ring dating to around 1900, bearing a message of love that remains just as touching today as it was over a century ago.

Created in 14 carat gold, and most likely of American origin, the ring has a substantial and pleasingly chunky band for its size. The top is formed as a panel bearing the word 'Darling'.

The lettering is picked out in dark blue enamel and framed by an enamel border, creating a striking contrast against the warm gold. Such affectionate inscriptions were highly popular at the turn of the century, transforming jewellery into intimate tokens of love and friendship.

Over the years, the enamel has experienced a fair amount of loss, commensurate with a piece that has clearly been cherished and worn. Yet, far from detracting from the ring, this wear adds to its charm. 

The simple word 'Darling' instantly evokes the person who gave it, the person who wore it, and the they felt. It is a small but powerful reminder of the enduring human need to keep loved ones close.
