A striking and beautifully designed Victorian locket. Rich in history and full of sentiment this was clearly a dearly loved piece that has passed down generations whilst keeping its original use.
The locket is formed with matching carved oval onyx panels to both the front and reverse, creating a dramatic appearance. The deep black onyx is framed by 9 carat gold fittings, the warm gold providing a beautiful contrast against the polished stone.
On the base edge of gold is a lovely hand engraved reading “M L M May 1881,” preserving a personal moment from the locket's long history and firmly dating it to the Victorian period.
Opening the locket reveals the quality of its design. Inside is a photograph of a soldier, most likely dating to the First or Second World War. We believe this to be a later addition, lovingly placed within the locket as it was passed down through the generations, adding another chapter to its remarkable story.
The juxtaposition of the original Victorian engraving and the later family photograph creates a particularly moving piece, illustrating how sentimental jewellery continued to evolve with each new owner while remaining a cherished holder of memories.
