A deeply moving and beautifully preserved Victorian mourning ring, created in 1851 and rich in sentiment and history. A true breath from the past.

At its centre lies an oval sardonyx, engraved with a delicate forget-me-not flower. A poignant emblem of remembrance and enduring love. Surrounding this is a soft halo of pearls, traditionally associated with tears and mourning.

The shoulders are ornately decorated with black enamel, a classic feature of Victorian mourning jewellery. At the back of the band we have the touching inscription 'In Memory Of' The craftsmanship is refined throughout, with the contrast of rich 18 carat gold and deep black enamel creating a striking yet dignified aesthetic.

Inside the band, the ring retains a glass covered locket compartment containing the original lock of soft blonde/ grey hair. An intimate and powerful connection to the individual commemorated. The inner inscription reads: 'Sophia Butt Ob Dec 8th 1851 Ae 60'. A good age for the era!

Through historical research, we have been able to trace Sophia: at the time of her passing, she lived in Gloucestershire. She was the wife of William Butt, a gentleman farmer residing in Little Haresfield, and records show they were married in 1817. On the marriage record we can see Sophia already had the surname Butt, a possible distant relative? These details bring a remarkable human story to the piece, grounding it in a real life and place.

Rings such as this were worn as constant memorials, keeping the memory of a loved one close at hand. The survival of its internal hairwork, clear inscription, and documented history makes this example particularly special. A remarkable and collectible piece for those drawn to mourning jewellery and objects with true emotional resonance.
