A rare and beautifully preserved relic of early 19th century sentiment. This Georgian mourning locket features an exquisite panel of brunette hairwork to the front. Delicately arranged atop the plaited ground sits a tiny basket of flowers, created with remarkable intricacy from miniature elements, likely seed pearls, strands of hair, and finely painted paper. Each chosen to convey remembrance and enduring affection.

The locket is gold cased, opening at the reverse to reveal a compartment once intended for a personal memento, reinforcing the deeply intimate nature of jewellery from this period. Flowers were a language of their own in the 1830s, and baskets symbolised abundance, offering, and the gathering of memories held dear.

Unusual and deeply historical, this locket is a moving testament to the craftsmanship and sentiment of Georgian mourning traditions. A wearable fragment of love and remembrance from nearly two centuries ago.
