Antique Carnelian Female Intaglio Ring in 9 Carat Gold; Circa 1850

A substantial Victorian ring with a real tactile feel on the band. This antique jewel has been created in warm 9 carat gold with a heavy, wide band and an impressive carnelian intaglio.

The generous bezel setting holds a piece of warm toned carnelian. Hand carved into the stone is the profile of a historical female figure. There is something particularly captivating about her appearance. Rather than the composed, idealised portraits often found on classical intaglios, this mysterious woman has an almost untamed quality, with her sweeping hair giving the carving a sense of movement and freedom.

The weighty gold band gives the ring a satisfying presence on the hand, while the warm gold and deep orange red carnelian make for a particularly beautiful combination.
