Antique Devilish Imp Cameo Brooch; Circa 1890

A truly unusual and intriguing Victorian brooch. This antique jewel features a cameo subject that is far removed from the classical ladies and mythological figures we so often encounter.

The cameo has been exquisitely carved with the figure of a devilish little imp, emerging from a rock outcrop. The figure is full of character, with an almost mischievous quality, and the remarkable level of detail in the carving makes this an exceptionally compelling antique piece.

Set within silver, the brooch would originally have been finished with a soft layer of gold gilt. Much of this original gilding has worn away, giving the silver a subtle warmth and adding to the slightly otherworldly quality of the piece.

Cameos depicting impish or fantastical figures are considerably less commonly encountered than the more familiar classical and portrait subjects, making this a particularly fascinating example. It feels almost like a little Victorian curiosity , playful, unusual and wonderfully expressive.

CONDITION: This is in lovely antique condition with some wear and tear overall. This would have been gold gilt but most of this has worn away.
