Antique Diamond Bulls Eye Mourning Ring 9 Carat gold; Circa 1860

A truly sublime and deeply sentimental Victorian mourning ring. This antique jewel has been created in 9 carat gold and conceals one of the most poignant details. A tiny lock of the lost loved one’s hair, preserved within a hidden compartment beneath the front of the ring.

The ring is centred with a beautiful oval bullseye agate, its naturally concentric bands creating the distinctive appearance that gives the stone its name. At its centre sits a single diamond, adding a tiny point of sparkle against the rich glowing agate. Surrounding the stone is a beautifully worked border with the inscription ‘IN MEMORY OF’. 

Beneath the front is a concealed locket compartment, still holding a small lock of fine blond hair belonging to the person being mourned. To find the original keepsake still preserved within the ring after all these years is incredibly touching, offering a connection to the person for whom this jewel was originally created.

There is something particularly moving about mourning jewellery that has retained its original contents. This is not simply a Victorian ring, but a tiny vessel of remembrance keeping someone’s memory close.
