A charming and deeply symbolic piece of sentimental Victorian jewellery, this petite signet ring is created in 9 carat gold and set with a finely carved bloodstone intaglio. The tiny scene engraved into the stone is exquisite in its detail. Cut by hand it depicts two birds perched at a fountain or bird bath, one bending to drink.
Such imagery carried layers of meaning for the Victorians, who loved to express sentiment and symbolism through their jewellery. Birds appearing in pairs were a tender emblem of love and companionship, while the shared water they drink symbolised the sustaining power of affection. Together, the scene evokes a sense of mutual care and harmony two loved birds.
The signet ring is a timeless setting for the intaglio and very wearable today as it was almost 200 years ago. The shoulders show traces of past ornate engraving; with just hint of what was once there.
