Antique Garnet Ouroboros Signet Ring in 9 Carat Gold; Circa 1870

An unusual Victorian ring, created in a classic signet ring design and centred with a glowing cabochon cut red garnet. Coiled around the stone is an ouroboros. This is the ancient symbol of a serpent consuming its own tail creating a wonderfully distinctive and deeply symbolic jewel.

The ouroboros is one of the oldest motifs in human history, appearing across ancient cultures and through to today. Its endless circular form has come to represent eternity, renewal and the eternal cycle of life, making it a particularly sentimental symbol for jewellery. There is something especially beautiful about the serpent encircling the garnet.

The mount itself is 9 carat gold and is decorated with intricate floral engraving across the shoulders. You can still find hints and traces of the original blue enamel decoration, adding a contrasting colour against the warm gold and giving a glimpse of how vivid this ring would once have appeared.

A rare and tactile piece of antique jewellery. This ring is full of history, symbolism and sentiment and unlike any other we have seen.

CONDITION: This is in lovely antique condition with a fine wear to both the gold and garnet. as can be seen most of the enamels depth has been lost and we have a lovely blue hue to define the engraved design.
