A unusual Georgian fob pendant, rich in symbolism and antique charm. The pendant has a  floral gold cased setting, with delicate botanical decoration framing the intaglio below. At its bottom is a wonderfully ethereal piece of soft hued agate, chosen for its gentle colouring and beautifully suited to the romantic subject carved within.

The agate has been finely engraved with the motto “AT SEA”, beneath which is the charming figure of Cupid riding a dolphin. The classical imagery is wonderfully evocative, combining the god of love with one of the great symbols of the sea.

Cupid riding a dolphin was a particularly poetic image and is a popular classical art image from ancient Greece and Rome through the Renaissance era. It symbolised the swift and powerful journey of love, harmony on the sea and can be found in statues, mosaics and historical paintings.

Fob pendants such as this were often worn suspended from a watch chain or ribbon and could carry deeply personal meanings. This example is particularly charming for the combination of its unusual inscription and classical imagery.
