Antique Georgian Scallop Mourning Locket

A truly moving Georgian pendant, beautifully capturing the sentiment and romance that make mourning jewellery from this period so compelling.

Created in the form of a scallop shell, the pendant has a wonderfully sculptural feel. The shell motif itself is rich in symbolism, long associated with pilgrimage and journeys and the passage from one life to the next. Its elegant fluted form creates a jewel that is both beautiful and deeply meaningful.

What makes this piece especially enchanting is its hidden secret. The shell opens from the top to reveal a concealed locket compartment within. Protected beneath the original glazed panel is a carefully braided lock of hair, preserved with remarkable integrity despite the passing of more than two centuries.

Hairwork was among the most intimate forms of sentimental jewellery. Unlike a portrait or inscription, it was a physical part of the person being remembered, creating a tangible connection between loved ones that endured long after death.
