Antique Georgian Mourning Ring 22 Carat Gold; Circa 1805

A sentimental Georgian mourning ring. This enduring token of love has been made from 22 carat gold and carries a particularly touching inscription that hints at the relationship between the original wearer and the man whose memory it preserves.

The outer edge of the ring has been chased with “'William Duguid died 20th Feb 1805 aged 48', while the inner band bears the beautiful inscription 'A Testimony Of Friendship'. It is an unusually intimate sentiment to find within a mourning ring, suggesting that this was most likely given to a close friend of William following his death.

The ring would originally have been considerably more decorative. Traces of its original white enamel surrounding William's name and dates, together with a fine black enamel border, remain in places, giving us a glimpse of how striking it would once have appeared.

We have also been able to find traces of William Duguid within the historical record. He appears to have been a merchant based in Aberdeen, where he lived with his wife, Marjory, and their five children. Most poignantly, we have also been able to locate the grave associated with William, allowing his story to be connected not only to the ring itself but to a tangible place of remembrance.

A beautiful and deeply personal piece of Georgian jewellery. A ring more than 220 years old made to ensure that William Duguid, and the friendship he had, would not be forgotten.

CONDITION: This is in lovely antique condition with a fine overall patina to the gold and with most of the enamel lost in time.
