A sublime and unusually designed Georgian mourning ring, rich in contrast, history and personal detail. Dating to 1809, this striking piece of sentimental jewellery combines warm 18 carat gold with deep black enamel, preserving the memory of a gentleman whose life we have been able to trace through the historical record.
The bold gold setting is framed with black enamel, with the dedication to the deceased wrapped around a central locket compartment containing finely plaited hair. The inscription tell us the ring is for Thomas Norman who died aged 69 on the 18th Sep 1809'
The combination of a personal dedication and a lock of hair makes this a particularly intimate survival. A tangible and real connection to someone who lived more than two centuries ago.
Our research has uncovered a fascinating picture of Thomas Norman. Born in 1740, he lived in Manningtree, Essex, a historic town with a much darker past: it was among the places associated with the notorious witch trials of 1645, led by Matthew Hopkins, the self styled Witchfinder General. Thomas would have been well aware of this dark time in the towns history.
Norman was a wealthy merchant who co-owned a brigantine vessel named Wells alongside other merchants. He married several times, his last wife being Frances, and was buried at the church of St Michael and All Angels. His extensive will provides a further glimpse into his world, leaving much of his property to his son James and making provision for his wife on the condition that she did not remarry.
It is this wealth of surviving detail that makes the ring so compelling. Behind the enamel, gold and plaited hair lies the story of a real man, his family and the life he left behind. A remarkable piece of Georgian mourning jewellery, carrying both a deeply personal memorial and a fascinating connection to England’s past.
