An evocative Georgian mourning ring, with a striking locket design and a poignant connection to a gentleman who lived in Suffolk over 230 years ago.
Created in warm 9 carat rose gold, the substantial curved glazed panel reveals a bold and intimate design. Within, a border of finely plaited hair surrounds a vivid blue enamel centre, hand decorated with an ornate letter ‘B’. The B is a little loose in within the frame, however no less beauty is lost. This is a striking ring made to be seen.
The reverse has its original inscription -'Wm Bridges, obt 29th Jan 1795, aet 68'
This records the death of William Bridges on 29 January 1795, aged 68. Through historical research, we have found William in the records as a yeoman living in Suffolk, England. A yeoman was a landholding farmer of some standing within his local community. The burial record we have traced appears to place him in the Sudbury Deanery in February 1795.
There is something particularly moving about a mourning ring when its inscription can be connected to a real person. Made to preserve a memory, this ring has survived for more than two centuries, carrying its original dedication, a lock of hair and the initial of the person it remembers.
A remarkable piece of Georgian sentimental jewellery, rich in history and intimate in its remembrance of William Bridges.
