A small but wonderfully darling Victorian seal fob, full of sentiment and charm.
This neat example features an ornate base metal mount, sweetly detailed and well proportioned. It ends in a rich purple glass paste intaglio, whose lilac hue catches the light with a soft, glowing translucence.
The intaglio is finely engraved with a simple circular motif above the word: 'Joy'. Encircling this is the poetic phrase: 'I sorrow I divide I double'. A beautifully expressive sentiment, typical of Victorian symbolism suggesting that joy shared is multiplied, while sorrow shared is eased. Such mottos were often worn as quiet affirmations of companionship and love.
Though modest in size, the piece is rich in meaning and detail, making it both a wearable curiosity and a token from history. Fobs such as this would traditionally have been worn on a watch chain, serving both decorative and practical purposes as personal seals. Now they are sort for after charms and pendants. .
