Antique Irish Motto Intaglio Fob Pendant; Circa 1880

An evocative antique fob, beautifully housed within a classic ornate gold cased setting and finished with a particularly sort after and symbolic rock crystal intaglio.

The clear rock crystal has been hand engraved with the patriotic motto 'Erin Go Bragh', an Anglicised rendering of the Irish Gaelic Éirinn go Brách, meaning 'Ireland forever' or, more literally 'Ireland until the end of time'. The phrase has been used as an Irish patriotic rallying cry for centuries, giving this little jewel a wonderful sense of history and identity.

Beneath the motto is a charming three leafed plant or seedling, adding a further natural and symbolic element to the engraving. The simplicity of the imagery works beautifully against the transparent rock crystal, allowing the inscription and design to be viewed from different angles.

The crystal itself is particularly intriguing. Although originally clear, it now displays soft traces of green and lilac colour within the setting. These subtle hues appear to have developed through historic water ingress, although the possibility of an original foil backing or tint cannot be ruled out. Rather than detracting from the piece, these traces give the crystal a wonderfully atmospheric, almost ethereal quality and are part of its history.
