A striking Victorian mourning ring features a more unusual motto and personal dedication.
The front of the ring is adorned with a vivid blue enamel panel bearing the poignant motto 'In Memoriam'. Framing the inscription are elegant floral motifs, each delicately set with old cut diamonds. The hand cut diamonds shimmer softly in the light, adding a subtle brilliance that complements the deep cobalt blue enamel.
The combination of the buttery 18 carat gold and vibrant blue enamel is particularly captivating. While black enamel is more commonly associated with mourning jewellery, blue enamel was also used during the Victorian period. Together, the colours create a jewel that is both bold and deeply moving.
Inside the band, the original but later inscription survives, reading 'Eliz Smith Obit March 30th 1903'.
A rare and evocative survivor. This is more than an antique ring, it is a lasting tribute, carrying the story of a life remembered and the enduring affection of those left behind.
