A truly historical relic. This Stuart crystal ring dates to around 1690, taking us back more than three centuries to the very end of the 17th century. A piece of history than can be still used today.
Created in 18 cart gold, the ring is centred with a squat, beautifully rounded Stuart crystal, beneath which delicate gold wirework initials have been preserved. The reverse of the setting is decorated with traces of the black enamel creating a scalloped look. The shoulders are wonderfully understated, decorated with flowing engraved detail that leads the eye gently towards the central crystal.
Stuart crystal jewellery is among the most poignant forms of early jewellery. Tiny pieces of woven hair, initials or other memorial details were placed beneath rock crystal and preserved within gold, allowing the wearer to carry a physical reminder of someone who had died. The surviving initials within this example make that sentiment especially tangible, even though the person they once represented has been lost to time.
Three hundred years of wear have inevitably softened the ring. Some of the original enamel has faded, the crystal has worn on its crips edges and the gold bears the marks of its long journey, but rather than diminishing its beauty, these signs of age make the jewel feel all the more authentic. It has survived generations, passed from hand to hand and somehow remained with us.
Ready to be worn and loved once again. A remarkable little piece of history, created to remember someone who lived more than 300 years ago.
