A wonderfully evocative Victorian fob, rich in symbolism and sentiment. The ornate base metal mount is beautifully worked with scrolling detail and a delicate floral heart motif. All of this giving the piece a romantic, almost talismanic presence.
Set to the base is a striking purple hued paste intaglio, carefully engraved with the motto “Brighter hours will come.” This optimistic phrase appears on a number of 18th and 19th century seals and jewels, offering reassurance and hope during difficult times. Beneath the inscription sits a finely cut lantern. A powerful emblem of guidance, endurance, and the promise that darkness will pass.
Such pieces were often carried as personal tokens of comfort, friendship, or remembrance, quietly expressing faith in the future when words were not easily spoken. This antique example even features historical red wax which we have left in.
Poignant, decorative, and full of meaning. This charming Victorian fob remains a beautiful symbol of hope as touching today as when it was first treasured over a century ago.
