A wonderfully unusual Victorian ring, dating to 1866 this miniature work of are has a dramatic character!
Created in 9 carat gold, the ring is set with an oval garnet glowing in rich deep red tones. While the stone itself is beautiful, it is undoubtedly the mount that makes this piece so extraordinary.
Rather than a traditional setting, the garnet is held in place by two finely detailed bear claws, gripping protectively to the stone with remarkable realism. The modelling is wonderfully expressive, with carefully carved texture and form that bring the claws vividly to life.
Animalistic motifs such as claws and talons were highly popular during the Victorian era, often symbolising strength and protection. This example has an especially bold and sculptural quality, giving the ring a wonderfully gothic feel.
The warmth of the gold perfectly complements the rich colour of the garnet, while the unusual design ensures the piece stands out beautifully on the hand.
