A wonderfully romantic pair of Victorian drop earrings. Dating to around 1890 they are beautifully designed with celestial inspiration and rather wonderful creature!
Created in gold, each earring takes the form of a crescent moon, a motif beloved throughout the Victorian era and symbolic of change and eternal love. Perched upon each crescent is a finely detailed fly, adorned with rose cut diamonds and rubies. Such whimsical insect motifs were highly fashionable during the late 19th century, prized for their symbolism of transformation and the beauty of the natural world.
The earrings are suspended from later hook fittings, allowing them to be comfortably worn today whilst preserving their original Victorian charm. What we find particularly endearing are the traces of the fine chain that would have hung the moons from but may have been too delicate for generations of wear.
Whimsical and full of character, these are beautiful Victorian earrings that perfectly capture the romance and craftsmanship of the era. Their combination of rich gold, lively rubies, and sparkling rose cut diamonds creates a pair that feels every bit as enchanting today as they were over 130 years ago.
