A truly remarkable and unusual Georgian fob, dating to around 1820, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of the period.

The top of the fob is sculpted as a finely modelled three dimensional bird, complete with delicately defined feathers and lifelike details. The main body continues this attention to detail, with applied leaf motifs around the edge in contrasting gold tones, demonstrating the Georgian love of texture, form, and subtle colour variation. Being made from 15 carat gold gives the entire piece a satisfying feel of quality and warmth.

At the base of the fob is a French carnelian intaglio, engraved with the phrase “Sans Sous et Sans Souci”, translating to roughly “Without care or worry.” Such inscriptions were often deeply personal and symbolic in Georgian jewellery, reflecting philosophical or sentimental meanings cherished by the owner. The warm tones of the carnelian complement the varied golds beautifully, making the intaglio both visually striking and symbolically rich.

This fob is a rare survival, combining sculptural artistry, fine engraving, and thoughtful symbolism in a single, highly tactile object. A standout example for collectors of Georgian jewellery, it embodies both the elegance and the intricate craftsmanship that define the era.
