Antique Georgian Fob Set With Ancient Boar Intaglio Pendant

A remarkable Georgian fob seal pendant, combining a well loved Georgian mount with what we believe to be a much earlier ancient intaglio, creating a jewel that spans centuries of history.

Created in 9 carat gold, the fob has a pleasingly simple and elegant form. Gentle wear from generations of love and use has softened its details, giving the piece a wonderfully tactile quality and serving as a testament to its long life.

The true highlight, however, is the nicolo intaglio mounted at its base. Carved with the image of a boar, the stone displays the distinctive layered blue and black appearance that made nicolo agates highly prized from the Roman period onwards. While the Georgian mount dates to the late 18th or early 19th century, we believe the intaglio itself is considerably earlier, and quite possibly Roman in origin.

In the ancient world, the boar was a powerful symbol of strength, courage and resilience. It frequently appeared on Roman engraved gems. During the Georgian period there was a great fascination with classical antiquity, and it was common for genuine ancient intaglios to be collected and mounted into contemporary jewellery, allowing these miniature works of art to be worn once again.

A rare antique pendant, uniting a Georgian fob with what is believed to be an ancient Roman nicolo intaglio, creating a truly timeless piece of jewellery with over two millennia of history.

CONDITION: This is overall in good antique condition with a patina of wear to the gold and agate. As can be seen in the pictures there are a few historical knocks and one repair - there isn one void in the side but this doesn't effect the security.
