A striking and bold Victorian mourning ring. This tactile band dates to 1877, created in rich 18 carat gold and features some charming elements hidden within the decoration.
The ring takes the form of a wide band, its entire surface dedicated to the poignant Victorian mourning motto “IN MEMORY OF”, picked out in Gothic lettering against a deep black ground. The strong contrast between the dark background and warm gold makes the inscription particularly dramatic.
One of the most charming details is the London assay office date letter “B” has been incorporated into the design itself. As well as within the interior, the hallmark becomes part of the decoration.
Mourning jewellery was an important part of Victorian culture, created to commemorate and remember those who had passed away. The words “In Memory Of” are perhaps among the most enduring expressions found on mourning jewels, transforming the ring into a deeply personal memorial.
