Wonderfully unusual and steeped in history! This remarkable Georgian locket is a beautiful example of the ingenuity and curios that defined jewellery of the early nineteenth century. Fashioned from a natural Australian quandong seed, it is both a curiosity and a personal keepsake.
The quandong seed has been carefully split in two and mounted within an exquisitely ornate 15 carat gold setting, the rich gold work framing. Hinged along one side, the locket opens smoothly to reveal a glazed compartment, originally intended to hold a treasured memento such as a lock of hair. The opposing side remains empty, allowing the remarkable natural beauty of the seed to be fully appreciated.
Jewellery incorporating natural materials was highly prized during the Georgian era, reflecting a fascination with the natural world and the romantic ideals of the period. Quandong seeds, with their beautifully textured surfaces and remarkable durability, were transformed into charming lockets and keepsakes, often carried as intimate reminders of loved ones. Their rarity today makes surviving examples particularly desirable amongst collectors of Georgian jewellery and curiosities.
Evocative and full of character, this Georgian quandong seed locket is a captivating survivor from over two centuries ago. A charming addition to any collection of antique jewellery or cabinet of curiosities.
