Antique Hercules and Omphale Ring; Circa 1895

An amazing and substantial antique ring. This historical jewel has been beautifully created from 14 carat gold and is full of classical character and mythology. 

The ring is made on a larger scale, with a generously proportioned band ornately hand engraved with intricate decoration. At the centre sits a striking rectangular agate cameo, finely carved with the classical figures of Hercules and Omphale.

The myth of Hercules and Omphale is a fascinating one. Omphale was a queen of Lydia, and according to classical mythology, Hercules was compelled to serve her for a period of time. The story famously reverses the traditional roles of power and gender, with Hercules depicted in service to the queen. Their unusual relationship became a popular subject for artists and jewellers.

The layered agate provides a wonderful natural backdrop to the carved figures, while the warm gold setting and elaborate engraved shoulders give the ring an unmistakably antique presence. Inside the band is a lovely personal detail: the hand engraved initials "JWF", adding a real connection to the original wearer.

MATERIAL: Marked '14k'

CONDITION: the ring is in good antique condition with only a fine patina overall  with a few nibbles to the agate as expected. There is a chip on the top left and right corners of the black agate however these are subtle due to the placement and colouring.
