A rather unusual Victorian novelty compass fob seal, designed as a miniature in the form of a ship's capstan!
Created in 9 carat gold, this delightful miniature is beautifully modelled in three dimensions, giving it a tactile quality and sense of curiosity. At first glance it appears to be a finely made maritime fob, but the true ingenuity of the piece is revealed when the top lifts open, uncovering a working compass concealed within. The nautical design is expertly done, celebrating the Victorian fascination with travel and exploration.
To the base, the fob is set with a polished circular bloodstone panel, creating a traditional seal matrix. The deep green bloodstone provides a beautiful contrast to the warm gold.
A rare and highly collectible Victorian novelty, this exceptional piece combines maritime history and skilled craftsmanship. Both decorative and functional, it is a wonderful example of the inventive spirit of Victorian jewellery.
