Antique Victorian Pool of Light in 9 Carat Gold; Circa 1880

A truly tactile and rather extraordinary Victorian pendant!  A “Pool of Light” locket carved from rock crystal and finished with warm 9 carat gold; so magical. 

The locket is beautifully formed as a round, almost spherical ball, making it a particularly unusual example of this type. The crystal is wonderfully clear and creates the characteristic magnifying effect associated with Victorian Pool of Light jewellery. The locket itself opens and closes securely, ready to hold a tiny photograph, keepsake or other treasured memento.

Pool of Light jewellery was made from beautifully clear pieces of rock crystal, carefully polished into rounded forms. The curved surface acts almost like a tiny lens, magnifying what lies beneath and creating the distinctive glowing appearance that gives these jewels their poetic name.

We have seen many Pool of Light lockets over the years, but the round, ball shaped form of this example is particularly special. There is something wonderfully tactile about holding it in the hand.
