A rare and rather macabre Georgian memento mori stick pin. This sort after jewel is centred on an extraordinary miniature work of glass art.
The pin is set with a striking deep purple glass panel which, in most light, appears almost black. Onto this a white modelled glass skull and crossbones has been applied during its creation. Entirely handmade, the glasswork is remarkable in its detail, creating an evocative reminder of the skill and symbolism of the Georgian era.
The skull and crossbones is one of the most recognisable memento mori motifs, serving as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of living with purpose. Rather than being morbid, these jewels reflected the Georgian fascination with mortality, and the enduring nature of the soul.
The reverse reveals an engraved silver back bearing the ornate initials "JWS", adding a further layer of mystery and personal history to this fascinating survivor.
Presented in an antique box, this is a truly exceptional collector's piece. Rarely encountered, it combines exquisite handmade craftsmanship with one of the most compelling themes in antique jewellery.
