Georgian Mourning Intaglio Pendant in 9 Carat Gold; Circa 1840

This evocative intaglio seal pendant dates to the late Georgian - early Victorian era. The seal is beautifully made from a vibrant green-yellow glass, mounted in a 9 carat rose gold setting with a suspension loop for wear as a pendant or fob. It's simple and timeless. 

 In soft crips letters the face of the seal is engraved with a poignant motto: “FORGIVE THE WISH THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT THEE HERE”

This touching sentiment reflects the mourning culture of the period. It conveys the bittersweet grief of loss. Acknowledging the natural wish for a loved one to remain, while at the same time expressing acceptance of their passing. Such mottos were often chosen to comfort the bereaved and embody the period’s deep sense of sentimentality and symbolism.
