An exceptional and evocative antique signet ring, dating to 1918, engraved with the proud insignia of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. The shield-shaped face features the regiment’s emblematic antelope, with the banner inscription “Royal Warwickshire.”
This ring is more than just a piece of jewellery. It is a fragment of history, carried through the defining conflict of the early 20th century, and a rare surviving artefact of a British soldier’s personal identity. This ring, hallmarked to 1918, was likely owned by a serving soldier or officer at the very moment when the regiment helped bring the Great War to its close. The warmth of the 9 carat rose gold gives it a warm glow.
The Royal Warwickshire Regiment, one of the most distinguished infantry regiments of the British Army, raised over 30 battalions during the Great War. By 1918, the regiment had been fighting on the Western Front since 1914, earning a formidable reputation.
-
Spring 1918 – German Offensive: The regiment endured the massive onslaught of the Kaiserschlacht (Spring Offensive), where battalions held their ground against overwhelming force in France and Flanders.
-
Summer 1918 – Defensive to Counter-Offensive: After sustaining heavy casualties, surviving Warwickshire units regrouped and participated in the Allied counterattacks.
-
Autumn 1918 – Final Advance: During the Hundred Days Offensive, the regiment played a role in breaking through the Hindenburg Line and pushing the German army back until the Armistice in November.
-
Over the course of the war, the regiment received 80 battle honours and six men were awarded the Victoria Cross.
