A striking intaglio ring dating to the first half of the 20th century, combining large scale with fascinating historical symbolism.
Set within a classic claw mounted 9 carat gold setting, the true star of the piece is the magnificent citrine at its centre. The large rectangular step cut stone glows with rich golden yellow hues. It catches the light beautifully and gives the ring a wonderful warmth and presence on the hand.
Carved into the citrine is a detailed Roman soldier, framed by the powerful motto, 'May God forget me when I forget my King'
A phrase steeped in devotion, the motto reflects themes of honour and unwavering faithfulness. Combined with the image of the Roman figure, the intaglio carries a wonderfully heraldic and almost ceremonial feel, touching on the spirit of earlier signets.
The crisp step cut facets of the citrine enhance the depth of the carving beautifully, while the simplicity of the gold mount allows the remarkable intaglio to remain the clear focal point.
