A rare antique find, this is an extremely fine example of Victorian insect jewellery. Fun and whimsical this tie pin would have been worn to create a little trick! We are also happy to be able to offer this in an antique box!
Created as a perfect life size blue bottle fly, when worn the pin disappears leaving what looks like a fly on you! A great piece of Victorian Novelty jewellery. The fly is created from metal which has been hand painted to look life like, even with deeper red eyes. The wings are textured celluloid which has a slightly movement making them extremely realistic. One wing has a little nibble but this is subtle.
The Victorian era was full of change with a thirst for exploration and knowledge. This often filtered down into design, architecture and jewellery. Increased industrialisation also saw people look back to nature and the animal kingdom. Bejewelled beetles, insects and spiders were all sort after as jewellery designs and this is a wonderful example. Flies were sort after adornments!
