A fascinating Victorian signet ring, combining striking heraldic imagery with a remarkable connection to possibly its original owner.
Created in warm 9 carat rose gold, the ring is set with a rich deep red carnelian intaglio. The stone has been beautifully hand engraved with a pair of outstretched wings beneath three stars, accompanied by the Latin motto: Libertas sub rege pio which translates to Liberty under a pious king.
Adding an unexpected layer of history, the inside of the band bears an original mourning inscription 'George Andrews died 22 March 1879 aged 71.'
This intriguing dedication suggests that the ring was later cherished as a memorial piece, preserving the memory of its owner. Through historical research, we have been able to trace George Andrews in the historical record. He spent much of his life in the London area, working for the Bank of England, and was residing in Uxbridge, Middlesex, at the time of his death in 1879. Records further reveal that his estate was entrusted to colleagues and close friends, offering a tangible glimpse into the life behind the jewellery.
With its beautifully engraved carnelian, warm rose gold mount, and documented provenance, this is much more than a signet ring. It is a wearable piece of history, connecting its next custodian directly to the life of a Victorian gentleman.
