Georgian Hercules Intaglio Ring; Circa 1790

An impressive Georgian ring that dates to the late 1700's. The striking monochrome colouring from the silver and intaglio has created a eye catching antique ring.

At the centre is a striking black basalt Wedgwood intaglio, beautifully set within the silver mount. The classical figure depicts Hercules, recognisable by the lion's skin draped over one shoulder and his club held in hand. The enduring attributes of the legendary hero.

The deep matte black of the Wedgwood basalt provides a wonderful contrast against the bright silver setting, while the large scale of the intaglio gives the ring an impressive presence on the hand.

Wedgwood's revival of classical imagery became hugely fashionable during the Georgian period, inspired by the eighteenth century fascination with ancient Greece and Rome. Hercules was particularly popular, representing strength, courage and triumph over adversity.

CONDITION: This is in lovely antique condition with some softening of the crisp detail around the engraving. The ring has been historical sized down which can be seen with the oval-ling of the band
