Georgian Locket Pendant & Chain in 9 Carat Gold; Circa 1831

A sentimental Georgian mourning pendant. Finely created in 9 carat gold this sublime piece of history holds a secret not initially seen. 

The front has a wonderfully classic Georgian appearance, with the rich purple of the amethyst set within its softly glowing frame of pearls. But it is on the reverse that the true sentiment of this little jewel is revealed.

Carefully engraved around the back is the poignant inscription ‘S.B Cb S. 3 1831 Aet at. 66’

The engraving surrounds a tiny, perfectly round concealed compartment, hidden behind a small glass hinged opening. Although the initials and inscription remain something of a mystery, the date 1831 and the age 66 suggest this is a mourning piece. The compartment now stands empty ready to be used for a new sentiemtnal token.

There is something incredibly moving about a mourning jewel retaining both its original inscription and its tiny hidden compartment. Over 190 years later, the pendant still carries a tangible connection to the person it was made to remember.

The pendant has been placed onto a later lightweight 9 carat gold chain, meaning it is ready to wear and continue its journey with a new owner.

A beautiful little piece of Georgian history. Romantic and deeply sentimental today as it ever was.
