This exquisite Georgian-era mourning pendant, dating to around 1810, is a fine example of early 19th century sentimental jewellery. The front features a delicate portrait of a gentleman set against an intricate background of woven hairwork. Surrounding the image is a black enamel border bearing the poignant inscription in gold: “AFFECTION WEEPS HEAVEN REJOICES.” The enamel is accented with a laurel motif, symbolizing eternal life.

The reverse of the pendant houses meticulously woven hair, a deeply personal inclusion that served as a lasting keepsake of a departed loved one. At 40mm in diameter, the pendant is substantial, yet refined, and would have been treasured as both a token of mourning and a piece of personal devotion.

Mourning jewellery became highly fashionable in the late Georgian period, reflecting both societal customs surrounding bereavement and a deep sentimental attachment to loved ones. Hair work was especially popular, hair was believed to carry the essence of the individual, making it a tangible link to the deceased. This pendant survives as a touching and evocative relic of the Georgian age, encapsulating both the skill of its maker and the enduring love it was meant to convey.
