Georgian Scottish Clan Griffin Intaglio Fob Pendant; Circa 1830

A rather unusual antique fob, carved entirely from a single piece of beautifully banded monochrome agate! Rather than the stone simply being set within a mount, the whole body of the fob has been sculpted from one piece of agate, giving it a wonderfully tactile quality. The base and suspension loop are finished with 9ct gold, providing a warm contrast to the cool, softly striped stone.

The base is engraved with the Latin motto 'ET CUSTOS ET PUGNAX', translated as “Both a guardian and a fighter”, above a finely engraved griffin and the initials “AM”. The motto is associated with Clan Marjoribanks, a Lowland Scottish clan, adding a lovely heraldic connection to this already unusual little fob.

WEIGHT: 13.0 grams approximately. 

INTAGLIO: 26 x 22mm approximately  (Height 35mm without loop)

CONDITION: This is in lovely antique condition with a fine overall patina to the gold and agate intaglio fob.
