About this treasure:

Filled with love this beautiful collectors piece would be a wonderful addition to any jewellery lovers collection. Created in 1778, marks the passing of cherished loved one, this mourning ring truly a captured movement of love in time.

Outside the band we have fine intricate enamelling ‘Jane Hatchett OB 11 APRIL 1778 AE 60 . This would have been created soon after Janes death to commemorate her life and to be worn and remembered by a loved one. 60 is also a remarkable age for the Georgian era when the average life expectancy was around 40. This, coupled with the high quality of mourning ring, indicate Jane Hatchett was a person of high status.

We also have the amazing addition of a mourning scene set at the front of the band. This delicate image set within a locket is of a Georgian era women sat next to a burial urn. The letters WH are marked at the base. Her face is that of love and loss. Amazing this scene is in major part created from human hair, most likely Jane‘s hair.

We not only love the story behind this ring, but we also love how it epitomises antique sentimental jewellery. Mourning jewellery became popular in the Georgian and Victorian era as a way of remembering those who have passed. They are testament to the adoration of one to another. They have always been cherished by later generations and have certainly seen a huge revival in recent years. Mourning jewellery can be found in a few styles, often filled with sentimental images, dark enamelling and unique engraving.
