A wonderfully characterful Georgian intaglio seal, carved from rich purple glass made to look like amethyst. A wonderful curio.
The face of the seal is engraved with a delightfully whimsical scene: a gentleman in a top hat, umbrella tucked neatly under his arm, accompanied by the charming motto “I hope I don’t intrude.” The engraving is crisp and full of personality, capturing the humour and polite social etiquette so characteristic of the Georgian period.
Such intaglios were used to impress wax seals onto letters and documents, serving both a practical purpose and a personal signature. Motto seals like this were especially popular, often reflecting the owner’s character, wit, or sentiment.
A rare and charming survivor, rich in character and social history. A delightful example of Georgian wit captured in miniature form.
