A rare and highly unusual Victorian bangle, created in 9 carat gold and designed with an expanding mechanism that allows it to slip comfortably over the wrist. The front is beautifully decorated with the commemorative date “1894”, formed in a flowing script and set throughout with sparkling rose cut diamonds. This all gives the piece both elegance and personal significance.
The year 1894 was notable in Victorian history, marking the publication of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, a work that would become one of the most enduring and influential pieces of literature of the era. It was also a time when Queen Victoria’s reign was approaching its later years, a period characterised by reflection, commemoration and sentiment. These themes often echoed in jewellery of this kind.
A striking and meaningful Victorian jewel, combining innovation, romance and history, and a wonderful survivor from the late 19th century.
