A poignant and beautiful example of Victorian mourning jewellery, this heart-shaped locket pendant embodies both sentiment and craftsmanship of the era. One side is set with a warm toned agate, its natural striations giving depth and character to the polished surface. The reverse opens to reveal a glazed heart-shaped panel, within which is preserved a finely woven panel of hair; a treasured memento of a loved one.
Mourning jewellery held a special significance in the Victorian period, when rituals of remembrance were highly symbolic and deeply personal. Locks of hair were often preserved in jewellery as a physical and lasting token of affection, offering comfort and connection to the departed. Heart-shaped lockets such as this were particularly tender in meaning, symbolising enduring love and devotion.
This pendant offers both aesthetic beauty and an intimate glimpse into 19th-century sentimentality. Whether worn or cherished as part of a collection, it stands as a rare and moving survival of the age
