An evocative early mourning ring, rich in history and sentiment. At its centre is an oval glazed panel featuring a delicately painted scene of a willow tree and an urn, a composition typical of 18th century mourning jewellery. Incorporated within the image is the hair of the departed loved one, making this a deeply personal and intimate memorial.
The band is engraved with the original dedication:
“R Prentice. ob 20 March 1779 AE 69.”
While the band would originally have been finished with enamel, this has been lost over time through wear and loving use, adding to the ring’s honest sense of age and history.
In mourning symbolism, the willow tree represents grief, sorrow and remembrance. Its drooping branches echoing the posture of mourning, while the urn symbolises the soul and the body’s mortal remains. Together, they form a powerful visual language of loss, memory and enduring love.
A rare and moving survivor. Not only a piece of jewellery, but a tangible expression of remembrance from the late 18th century.
