Victorian Diamond & Pearl Mourning Ring in 18 Carat Gold; Circa 1838

A deeply poignant early Victorian mourning ring. This antique was created in 18 carat gold and centred around one of the most enduring symbols of remembrance, the forget me not flower.

The ring is designed as a bold flower, with a central diamond surrounded by pearls to form the petals, all framed by a border of black enamel. The forget me not was a particularly lovely choice for a memorial jewel, its name carrying a simple but powerful request to remember those who have passed. The pearls, often associated with tears in mourning jewellery, add another layer of sentiment.

The band's crisp edges have softened with time, but traces of its original design remain. The band would once have been adorned with the motto ‘IN MEMORY OF’ with black enamel within. 

Inside, we find the original inscription ~ Sarah Atkinson died 14th Nov aged 79. This intimate dedication connects us directly to Sarah. She passed so long ago, and clearly was deeply loved. 

A beautiful and moving antique, its softened edges only adding to the sense of a jewel worn and cherished over generations. A little piece of personal history, created to ensure that Sarah Atkinson would not be forgotten.

CONDITION: This is in lovely antique condition with a fine overall patina. As can be seen almost all the enamel has been lost from the band and softening of the crisp edges of the band motto.
