Victorian Engraved Presentation Locket Boxed; Circa 1884

A truly wonderful piece of Victorian social history, this substantial silver locket survives in its original presentation box and carries an exceptionally personal inscription.

The front of the locket is beautifully engraved with the ornate initials "AMD", while the reverse bears a wonderfully preserved presentation inscription: 'A small token of kindness. In memory of 10 years faithful services with Mr & Mrs W.W. Aston. 117 Harley Street Dec 2nd 1884' 

The locket was given as a token of appreciation to someone who had devoted a full decade of faithful service to Mr and Mrs W.W. Aston of 117 Harley Street. Unlike jewellery simply purchased as an adornment, this was a gift intended to commemorate a relationship built over many years, offering a rare glimpse into the personal and domestic world of Victorian London.

Our research into the couple has revealed a fascinating wider history. Mr and Mrs W.W. Aston, associated with 117 Harley Street and later 44 Portland Place, appear in historical records as prominent figures within London's late nineteenth and early twentieth century art collecting circles. They were particularly noted for their celebrated collection of antique portrait miniatures and enamels, including works by important artists such as Christian Friedrich Zincke.

Their collection was so distinguished it appeared in historic exhibitions before eventually being sold through major auction houses, including Christie's. The connection adds an interesting layer to this otherwise deeply personal jewel: the locket was presented by a couple whose lives were intertwined with London's fashionable artistic and collecting world.

Opening the locket reveals two photographic compartments containing period photographs: one depicting a band of gentlemen and the other a lady. While we cannot say with certainty who the photographs depict maybe Mrs and Mr Aston or the receiver and a loved one?

The original presentation box is an especially wonderful survival, preserving not only the locket itself but something of a glimpse in which it was originally gifted. Together, the locket, photographs, inscription and box create an unusually complete Victorian story.
