A striking Victorian silver band, rich in history and carrying a sentiment that feels every bit as relevant today. At 9mm wide, the crisp silver band offers a substantial setting for a most remarkable feature. A quotation picked out in vivid, multicoloured enamel.
The words read ‘TRUE NOBLENESS TEACHES FORBEARANCE’, with the attribution ‘Hen. IV’. The Gothic lettering is adorned with red, green and blue enamel a wonderful touch.
The quotation comes from Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 2, spoken by Walter de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, as he faces his death. In a final appeal to those who have captured him, Suffolk invokes the idea that true nobility is shown not through vengeance or cruelty, but through restraint and mercy. It is a remarkably powerful sentiment to carry on a ring and something we have not seen before. Quite possibly a bespoke Victorian ring.
A compelling antique for the Shakespeare enthusiast, the lover of Victorian silver, or anyone drawn to jewellery with meaning beyond its materials.
