A rare and enchanting treasure from the Victorian era, this charming brooch captures the whimsy and fascination with nature that so defined 19th century jewellery.
Lovingly created by Mappin & Webb in warm 9m carat rose gold, the piece centres on a beautifully detailed spider. A creature celebrated in Victorian symbolism for its patience, creativity, and the delicate strength of its web. Its body is adorned with tiny lustrous seed pearls, while two glowing cabochon rubies form its eyes, lending a touch of rich colour and lifelike character.
The spider rests upon a slender gold bar, a simple style that makes this piece wonderfully versatile. It's perfect worn as a brooch, styled as a pendant, or even used as a chain extender. As is often the case with antique insect jewels, a few of the delicate legs have been lost to time, a gentle reminder of its long and storied past, though this does nothing to diminish its charm.
A captivating example of Victorian sentiment and style, this piece is more than just an ornament, it’s a tiny piece of history, carrying with it over a century of beauty, symbolism, and imagination.
