A striking and unusual Victorian Essex crystal brooch. This substantial oval piece is set in gold and intricately engraved beneath the crystal with the motto “Evehit ad Deos” — “It raises to the gods.” within a lucky horseshoe banner. Below sits a wonderfully detailed scene of a horse drawn carriage carrying five figures.

The colours, once bright, have softened over time and through possible water exposure, creating a muted palette that allows the engraving and the warm gold backing to gently glow through. This patina adds to the charm and character of the piece, giving it a quietly beautiful presence.

Distinctive and full of curiosity, this is a brooch for those who cherish jewellery with history, artistry, and a touch of the unusual.
