A poignant relic of Victorian remembrance this brooch is filled with love and symbolism. In a shield shaped this mourning brooch features rich black enamel framed by a gold border reading “In Memory Of.” At its centre sits a finely rendered gold urn beneath the gentle sweep of a willow tree. These are two powerful symbols of grief and endurance in the 19th century. The urn represented the soul and the vessel of memory, while the weeping willow symbolised sorrow that bends but does not break, evoking resilience through mourning.

Beneath this scene is a small glazed compartment containing finely woven brunette hair, preserved exactly as it was when first crafted. Such keepsakes offered a tangible connection to a loved one, held close as a quiet companion through loss and remembrance.

Elegant in form and rich in meaning, this brooch remains a beautifully crafted testament to Victorian sentiment and the enduring desire to honour those who have passed.
